The TKU highway reconstruction project in eastern Kazakhstan was completed and opened to traffic at the end of last year, improving transportation conditions along an important north–south route. Daily traffic has reached approximately 6,000–8,000 vehicles.

The project was the first highway reconstruction project in Kazakhstan undertaken by a Chinese-invested enterprise, with Shandong Hi-Speed Group responsible for construction work on Sections 2, 5 and 6. MIKUR Advanced Materials supplied concrete admixture solutions used in the project.

Concrete Challenges in Kazakhstan’s Extreme Climate

Kazakhstan’s inland continental climate creates demanding conditions for concrete construction. During the project, daytime temperatures reached as high as 48°C, while large day–night temperature differences added further challenges.

Local sand and aggregate quality also varied because of geological conditions and extraction processes. Changes in moisture content and material quality can affect concrete workability and admixture compatibility.

High cement and concrete temperatures can reduce admixture effectiveness, leading to faster slump loss, poor water retention and, in severe cases, segregation between aggregate and cement paste. These issues are particularly important for highway projects where concrete must remain workable during transportation and placement.

MIKUR Admixture Solutions for High-Temperature Concrete

To address the project conditions, MIKUR optimized its admixture system with a focus on temperature adaptability, material compatibility and concrete workability.

1. Temperature adaptability

The formulation uses molecular structure design to improve slump retention and dispersion performance under high-temperature conditions. According to the project application information, the product maintained good dispersion performance at temperatures up to 48°C.

The admixture system was also designed to help control early cement hydration heat and reduce the risk associated with temperature cracking under large temperature fluctuations.

2. Compatibility with Variable Materials

Because local aggregates and cement materials can vary, MIKUR conducted application testing to evaluate compatibility with different material qualities.

The formulation combined water-reducing, water-retaining and air-entraining functions to help concrete maintain workability, water retention and strength when raw-material conditions fluctuate.

3. Results at the TKU Highway Project

At the TKU highway reconstruction site, the MIKUR admixture system demonstrated several practical benefits.

Concrete maintained good flowability and water retention during high-temperature transportation, without the reported bleeding and segregation problems.

Setting time could be controlled to help avoid false setting under high-temperature conditions and support continuous placement of large-volume concrete.

After hardening, the concrete demonstrated good strength and durability, with finished structures described as dense and smooth. The project team provided positive feedback on the application.

From Project Application to Long-Term Partnership

For overseas infrastructure projects, product performance is only one part of successful delivery. Reliable technical support and timely response to local construction conditions are equally important.

The TKU project demonstrates how a concrete admixture supplier can adapt product performance to a demanding combination of high temperature, large temperature variation and variable raw materials.

MIKUR Advanced Materials will continue to develop concrete admixture solutions for Kazakhstan and the wider Central Asian market, combining product development with application support for overseas infrastructure projects.
